“Everyone gets on well at Epsom Village.”

At Real Living we’re very lucky to have lovely and charming gentlemen like John who always brightens up any room he steps into with his smile alone. John moved to Epsom Village exactly 3 years ago, mainly because of its location. He quickly fell in love with the village’s atmosphere: “It’s got a very friendly atmosphere. Everyone gets on well and we don’t have any problems. I can do my own thing, or I can join in, it suits me very well."

John joins most of the village's special events and he always tries to follow the dress code (blue and yellow in this picture) with a good sense of humour.

John’s worked most of his life in Sales and Marketing management, including his role in a big German pharmaceutical company. He worked for a few years as a Real Estate agent in Whangamata until 2014 when he totally changed his career: “Now I’m making cookies!”, he says bursting into laughter. Alongside his son-in-law and his daughter, John bought Kea Cookies, a company that manufactures great tasting gluten, wheat, dairy and egg free cookies.

Kea cookies can be found in health food stores and grocery stores throughout New Zealand.

John helps the company in a part-time basis, doing Administration and assisting with the Marketing. It’s a medium-sized business with only eight staff members that makes the family very happy. They are all very proud of the new new flavours they introduced, such as iced cookies or lemon coconut cookies.

John is chatting here with his son-in-law, Andrew, who is in charge of the day-to-day running of the company.

John and his late wife were very keen travellers, mainly around Europe but they also explored some parts of Asia including Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore. John was originally born in Romania from Greek parents, so Greece still holds a very special place in his heart.

Covid has stopped John from travelling to Europe but Epsom Village's special photobooth took him and his friends to a hot tropical island last year.

When he’s not busy at the village or with Kea Cookies, John devotes his energy to his close-knit family and keeps in contact with his grandchildren… eleven of them! We’re pretty sure that he’s quite a popular grandparent with all the cookies he may bring with him every time he visits!

John's tea parties with his grandchildren could only be stocked with some of the best cookies around New Zealand.
