Peggy Squares with a Purpose: A Heartfelt Initiative
At Remuera Gardens our residents are coming together to make a difference, one stitch at a time.
Every Monday afternoon, the 'Pins and Needles' group gathers in the Community Lounge at Beattie Lodge to knit peggy squares, which will later be crocheted into cosy blankets. These blankets are then donated to local charities such as the Auckland City Mission, Anglican Trust for Women and Children, Community Midwives, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at National Women’s Hospital. Through their dedication and skill, this group is making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need within our community.
This initiative is being run in collaboration with St Aidan’s Church, which generously provides needles, wool, and other materials to support the knitting efforts. The group was initiated by resident Jill, who couldn’t be happier with its success: "The whole idea started as a way to bring people together on those cold winter afternoons, and I’m thrilled with how things are turning out. Every week, we see new faces joining in, even those who typically prefer to stay in. It’s wonderful to see the variety of colours and creativity that everyone brings to the table."
The table is now filled with the bright and colorful peggy squares that the residents have knitted over the past six weeks—with enough squares to create four blankets and three rugs. Knitting for charities is not only a wonderful way to support a good cause, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity for residents to come together, share ideas, swap patterns, exchange yarns and buttons, and bond over life stories. Like many others, Jill had to relearn how to knit, but the effort has been well worth it: "It started off very quietly, but it’s become a bit competitive now, with everyone eager to see who can knit the most peggy squares", she says with a laugh.
Contributing to a worthy cause not only enriches the lives of those who receive these lovingly crafted blankets but also brings immense joy and fulfillment to those who create them. By coming together to knit peggy squares, our residents are not just making a tangible difference in the world—they’re also building connections, fostering friendships, and experiencing the deep satisfaction that comes from giving back.
