Winter Fun at Epsom Village: Take the Plunge Event

Epsom Village started the Take the Plunge challenge four years ago, inspired by the "Polar Bear Plunges" held around the world where participants enter bodies of water despite low temperatures. These events are often linked to special dates such as New Year's Eve or, in New Zealand's case, the Winter Solstice (the shortest day in late June).

On Friday, June 21st, residents and staff who wanted to take on the challenge gathered around the village's pool, many of them dressed in costumes to add to the festive atmosphere. The standout winner of the informal competition was resident Dianne, who appeared in a 1920s Great Gatsby-inspired outfit that suited her perfectly. The highlight of her attire was a Titanic-themed floating ring that brought laughter to everyone.

When the Take the Plunge challenge started four years ago, very few residents were brave enough to jump into the pool. However, the event has grown in popularity every year, with more residents taking the plunge and many others coming as spectators, likely considering joining next year.

The pool at Epsom Village is gently heated to make the challenge more comfortable. Some regulars at the event include maintenance staff member Les (who chose a Blues outfit to jump in this year) and the dynamic duo Anna and Penny, the Activities and Village Coordinators, who always try to coordinate costumes for the challenge. However, it's the residents who consistently outdo themselves with their costumes. A couple of years ago, Dianne also surprised everyone with a delightful outfit that included a hot water bottle.

Dianne also made us laugh in 2022 with her hot water bottle outfit.

The Take the Plunge event is one of the community bonding events organized by Epsom Village, particularly during the winter months when weather limits outdoor activities. This challenge goes on rain or shine and uplifts the spirits of all residents, especially since they all share a warm bowl of delicious soup (thanks to Diana for preparing it) after the challenge.
